Elle est doublée de fossés&nbsp;et ponctuée de portes et&nbsp;de tours. Une porte tour est édifiée au pied de Pierreuse. Le premier pont des arches est&nbsp;construit vers 1033.</FONT></FONT></P> <P align=left><FONT face=Verdana size=2>&nbsp;&nbsp; </FONT><FONT color=#ff0000 size=4>&nbsp;<FONT face=Verdana><FONT face="Times New Roman" size=5>Début du XIIe siècle</FONT> </FONT><FONT color=#000000><FONT size=3><FONT face=Verdana>l<FONT size=2>'empereur</FONT></FONT> Henri IV aurait fait agrandir l'enceinte et jet<FONT face=Verdana size=2>ter des fondements de remparts vers Sainte-Walburge, mais faute de moyens et de bonne volonté, les travaux échouent.</FONT> </FONT></FONT></FONT></P> <P align=justify><FONT face="Trebuchet MS, Verdana" size=2>&nbsp;&nbsp;<FONT size=5>&nbsp; <FONT face="Times New Roman" color=#ff0000>1204</FONT></FONT><FONT size=2> on construit une muraille avec tours&nbsp;partant de la porte Sainte-Walburge&nbsp;jusqu'à Païenorte et descendant jusqu'à la Meuse,ainsi qu'une autre muraille reliant Hocheporte à Sainte-Walburge.</FONT> </FONT></P> <P align=justify><FONT face="Trebuchet MS, Verdana" size=2><FONT size=2>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<FONT face="Times New Roman" color=#ff0000 size=5>Mai 1212</FONT> encore inachevées les murailles sont escaladées par les troupes d' Henri 1er de Brabant qui dévalent vers la cité et la mette aussitôt à sac. Pour les Liégeois la leçon est dure, ils reprennent les travaux de façon intensive. Ils seront achevés en 1215.</FONT> </FONT></P> <P align=justify><FONT face="Trebuchet MS, Verdana" size=2><FONT size=2>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<FONT face="Times New Roman" color=#ff0000 size=5>1255 </FONT>Le prince évêque Henri de Gueldre fait démolir les murailles de&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Sainte-Walburge à Païemporte et fait ériger la porte Sainte-Walburge, ce qui met en colère les Liégeois, qui voient là un moyen de les tenir en respect. Il y adjoint une forteresse avec tours, pont levis, puits, prison et escaliers du côté de le vallée.&nbsp;<FONT color=#0000ff><FONT color=#ff0000>C'est en fait la</FONT> </FONT><FONT color=#ff0000>premiére citadelle.</FONT></FONT> </FONT></P> <P align=justify><FONT face="Trebuchet MS, Verdana" size=2><FONT size=2><FONT color=#ff0000>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <FONT face="Times New Roman" size=5>1468</FONT></FONT> Les troupes de Charles le Téméraire s' apprêtent à mettre la ville à sac, et c'est l' histoire&nbsp;des 600 Franchimontois, qui attaquent les troupes sur les hauteurs de la citadelle, mais ils ne peuvent empêcher la destruction de la ville. En souvenir de l'évènement les escaliers de la montagne de Bueren prennent le nom de "600&nbsp; escaliers" (ne pas confondre avec les 600 grés qui se trouvaient vers Païenporte&nbsp;), bien que contrairement à la légende, ils n'ont jamais escaladé la montagne de Bueren, mais seraient venus par Favechamps, sur le côté de Pierreuse.&nbsp; </FONT></FONT></P> <P align=justify><FONT face=Verdana><FONT size=2>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<FONT size=+0><FONT color=#ff0000> &nbsp;<FONT face="Times New Roman" size=5>1650</FONT> </FONT>Le&nbsp;prince èvêque Maximillien Henri de Bavière fait ériger un vaste pentagone fortement protègé, mais les Français en guerre font sauter la construction. </FONT></FONT></FONT></P> <P align=justify><FONT face=Verdana><FONT size=2><FONT size=+0>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <FONT face="Times New Roman" color=#ff0000 size=5>1684</FONT> les travaux sont repris. Cette citadelle devra encore subir de nombreux assaut de la parrt des bélligérants, toujours les mêmes. </FONT></FONT></FONT></P> <P align=justify><FONT face=Verdana><FONT size=2><FONT size=+0>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <FONT face="Times New Roman" color=#ff0000 size=5>Début du XVIIIe siécle</FONT> des traités&nbsp;de paix décident que les redoutes côtés campagne seront démolies. La citadelle en perd son&nbsp;intèret militaire mais pas son aspect. Les alentours deviennent le jardin du gouverneur où les citadins aiment se promener.</FONT></FONT> </FONT></P> <P align=justify><FONT face=Verdana><FONT size=2><FONT size=+0>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <FONT face="Times New Roman" color=#ff0000 size=5>1789 </FONT>Pour imiter les révolutionnaires Français, la population envahit et pille la citadelle. Elle sera de nouveau envahie par les régiments qui&nbsp;investirent le pays.</FONT></FONT></FONT></P> <P align=justify><FONT face=Verdana><FONT size=2><FONT size=+0>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <FONT face="Times New Roman" color=#ff0000 size=5>1817</FONT> Aprés la chute de Napoléon la reconstruction de la citadelle est décidée pour&nbsp;dresser un solide rempart contre la France. C'est le duc de Wellington qui dirige les travaux. L'ensemble fortifié sera réalisé à la Vauban. Il comprendra un pentagone avec caserne 5 bastions fortifiés, parapets, chemins couverts, fossés, escarpes et glacis. Sur le linteau une inscription : Excetsus Animus Nec Minis - Nic Illata VI Commoventur.</FONT></FONT></FONT></P> <P align=justify><FONT face=Verdana><FONT size=2><FONT size=+0>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;<FONT face="Times New &#13;&#10; &#13;&#10; Roman" color=#ff0000 size=5>1830</FONT> C'est la révolution. La garnison Hollandaise doit capituler. Le deuxième bataillon du premier régiment de la Belgique indépendante occuppe en premier l' édifice.</FONT></FONT></FONT></P> <P align=justify><FONT face=Verdana><FONT size=2><FONT size=+0>&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;<FONT face="Times New Roman" color=#ff0000 size=5> 1891</FONT> un arrêté royal déclasse la citadelle en tant que fortifications. Il faut à Liége une ceinture de forts. Ce sera la position fortifiée coçue par le général Brialmont.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;</FONT></FONT></FONT></P> <P align=justify><FONT face=Verdana><FONT size=2><FONT size=+0>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <FONT face="Times New Roman" color=#ff0000 size=5>1914</FONT> &nbsp;Le glorieux 12e de Ligne défend la ville et mérite sa première&nbsp;citation. Puis c'est le replis&nbsp;derrière l' Yser ou le 12e reçois encore 5 citations. Pendant ce temps la citadelle sert de logement aux troupes du Kaizer, de camps d' internement et d'hopîtal pour les soldats alliés.
